Interview with director Yang Zi | Jackie Chan’s 60 years are all in "The Spirit of Dragon Horse"

1905 movie network feature "Dragon Tiger Martial Master, never say no!"On April 7, international superstar Jackie Chan celebrated his 69th birthday, and his new film "Dragon Horse Spirit" also chose to meet the audience on this special day.

The film tells the story of Jackie Chan playing Lao Luo, who was the strongest dragon and tiger martial artist in the past, but was injured due to a dangerous action shooting. From then on, the scenery is no longer there, and he can only live with his beloved horse, Red Rabbit.

Director Yang Zi said in an exclusive interview with 1905 Movie Network that the role of Lao Luo was "tailor-made" for Jackie Chan’s eldest brother, and also showed the spiritual outlook of the older generation of dragon and tiger martial artists, paying tribute to these action actors who really fight!

When the film was filmed, it coincided with the 60th anniversary of Jackie Chan’s film career. As a loyal Jackie Chan fan, Yang Zi couldn’t help but design countless "Easter Egg Terriers". Through clothing styling and action lines, he took everyone back to Jackie Chan’s 60-year classic roles and presented a heartfelt "memoir" for his idol.

How to impress Jackie Chan’s big brother to join us? How to invite Wu Jing to "act as he is"? How hard did Jackie Chan, who is nearly 70 years old, work hard on the set? 1905 Movie Network interviewed Yang Zi, director and screenwriter of "Dragon Horse Spirit", to reveal the secrets behind the scenes of the film.

"Tailored"

"When I was a judge at the Silk Road International Film Festival, I was fortunate enough to watch a film called’Dragon and Tiger Martial Artist ‘. I was so shocked that I came up with the idea of creating a movie with Dragon and Tiger Martial Artist as the protagonist." Director Yang Ziru explained the origin of the creation of’Dragon and Horse Spirit’.

Unexpectedly, this idea was successfully affirmed and supported by Jackie Chan. He also shared a lot of past memories with Yang Zi, which were all incorporated into the creation of the script as valuable materials."The protagonist, Lao Luo, is indeed a character tailor-made for the eldest brother, and it also represents the spiritual outlook of the entire dragon and tiger martial arts industry."

As a veteran fan, Yang Zi admitted that he could not hold back a lot of "private goods", "whether intentionally or not, when the person in front of the camera is Jackie Chan, I can’t help but want to hear him repeat those classic lines or funny memes of the year."

As a result, the attentive audience will find that Guo Qilin’s character is called "Naihua", which is derived from the lawyer Zhou Huajian played in "Glass Bottle". The classic dish "Fruit Cat Stewed Water Fish Whip" in "Police Story 3: Super Cop" has also made a comeback, which is sure to make fans smile.

Since the whole story took place in the film and television city, the appearance of various costume scenes would not be contrary to the feeling of harmony, which also made the director Yang Zi "pay tribute" more enjoyable.

The long shirts in "Drunk Fist 2", the short shirts in "Young Master Long", the ancient costumes in "Myth", the tribal style in "Who Am I", the skateboard boy in "Fast Food Truck", the classic hat-throwing action in "Miracle" and so on, all of which are reminiscences, making fans hooked.

Yang Zi recalled that every time Jackie Chan changed into the same costume and made a signature move, it would cause shouting one after another on the set, which also made him particularly happy.

"Big brother likes to satisfy the small requests of movie fans the most. When he sees all of us yelling and never seeing the world, he thinks it’s very cute. He thinks that since I’m wearing this, it can make you so happy, and I believe other movie fans will be very happy when they see it, so our Easter eggs will increase more and more."

"Legacy"

"Big brother, let’s film together! My play." In "Dragon Horse Spirit", Wu Jing’s appearance is surprising. His role is a popular action star who was once promoted by Lao Luo. Through the dialogue between the two about real combat or special effects, he also shows the mental collision of two generations of action filmmakers.

Yang Zi said bluntly that this role is Wu Jing’s "true character", "Brother Jing is the perfect choice, and this character is him."In the backstage of Jackie Chan Action Movie Week, Jackie Chan also personally sent an invitation to Wu Jing, who agreed without hesitation, "Brother Jing is very busy, but he specially arranged time for the same frame as the big brother to play this role."

After all, this is the first time Jackie Chan and Wu Jing have the same frame on the big screen, and the interpretation is closely related to the theme of Dragon and Tiger Martial Arts, and many of the lines make them feel the same.

Yang Zi recalled that during the filming of a rival scene, Jackie Chan and Wu Jing once had tears in their eyes. "Big brother has been a benchmark for several generations of action actors. Everyone has basically accepted the support or help of big brother. So when they see those lines, they can’t help but think back to the past. It’s really a very heartfelt and direct communication."

If Jackie Chan and Wu Jing are passed down from action filmmakers, then the relationship with his "son-in-law" Guo Qilin can be said to be a "sudden change in style".Yang Zi also praised Guo Qilin without hesitation as the "King of Explosive Obstruction" on the set, adding comedy elements to the film both inside and outside the play.

"His control of comedy and his accurate output of humor have become instinctive. At the same time, as long as he is around, the scene will become extremely happy, and he will always say something at any performance, whether it is complaining, teasing or self-deprecating, which will make everyone laugh."

In the film, a scene where Jackie Chan teaches Guo Qilin to straddle can be called a "scene of calamity". Guo Qilin also laughed: I hope the door of the action movie that has just opened will be "closed" quickly.

In this regard, director Yang Zi said that Guo Qilin is very hard-working and loves to try new things. "Maybe one day he suddenly decides to challenge again, and this door will be kicked open by himself!"

"60 Years of Shadow"

Jumping down from the Ferris wheel and the roof, using various props to move around and reproduce the style of "Furniture God of War", in "Spirit of Dragon Horse", we can still see the uncompromising action scenes of Jackie Chan.

What impressed Yang Zi the most was the shooting of the Ferris wheel scene. Facing the Ferris wheel about 10 stories high, Jackie Chan, who is nearly 70 years old, insisted on shooting in person, just to present the best effect.

When he landed firmly, all the staff couldn’t help but clap their hands, but Jackie Chan said calmly: "What’s so small to clap, it was more dangerous to do it before."

Yang Zi confessed that considering Jackie Chan’s age and injuries, he had also made plans to reduce the complexity of his movements, but they were all rejected by the eldest brother himself, "Simple, it’s not Jackie Chan."

For the sake of "Dragon Horse Spirit", Jackie Chan postponed the day of knee surgery and received nine injections to close the group, but because he did too many "running, jumping, falling" and other actions in a short time, the pain relief effect of half a year was consumed in just 20 days.

Talking about this, Yang Zi was also very distressed, "Big brother always said to me: don’t let the fans down, to meet their inner expectations of the action scenes in Jackie Chan movies, especially such a film that shows the theme of Dragon Tiger Martial Artist, I want to show the state and feeling of this character."

When he heard "turn on", he was desperate and tried his best for every action. Lao Luo in the movie seemed to be Jackie Chan in the parallel world, fulfilling that promise with his whole life: "Dragon and tiger martial artist, never say no!"

Or as the line goes: They are a very simple group of people with only three words: boot, jump, hospital.

Yang Zi told us that it was of extraordinary significance to Jackie Chan that "The Spirit of Dragon Horse" could be filmed and released at an important time in Jackie Chan’s 60 years of film. This is a retrospective created by my brother and fans, a gift, and a precious "memoir".

"60 years of accumulation, 60 years of love, 60 years of perseverance. What is presented here is not just a filmmaker spirit, but more like a craftsman spirit that we now respect – ‘choose one thing and do it for a lifetime’. Big brother is the best representative of this spirit."
