Karnal lathicharge: Haryana notifies probe panel, report to be submitted by Oct 25

The Haryana government has finally notified the Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice Som Nath Aggarwal (retd) and also its terms of reference to probe the sequence of events that led to the police lathicharge at Bastara toll plaza in Karnal on August 28. The panel will be submitting its findings by October 25.

“Serious issues concerning public importance relating to events leading to the incidents at Bastara toll plaza in Karnal on August 28, 2021 and alleged illegalities therein have come to the notice of the Government of Haryana and whereas, the state government is of the considered opinion that it is necessary to appoint a Commission of Inquiry for the purpose of making an inquiry into the definite matter of public importance viz. events leading to the incidents at Bastara toll plaza in Karnal and all other matters incidental thereto or connected therewith,” the notification read.

As per the notified terms of reference, the Commission of Inquiry will give its recommendation and findings on – the circumstances leading up to and including the action by the police at Karnal on August 28, 2021 and the use of force against the demonstrators; persons responsible for said situation; role of Shri Ayush Sinha, IAS, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Karnal, in the action by the police on August 28.

On September 10, state government’s representative senior IAS officer Devender Singh had managed to pacify the agitated farmer unions and protestors who were camping outside Karnal’s mini-secretariat demanding stern action against the then Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha for his objectionable “break the heads” remark. Acting on behalf of the state government, Singh had held multiple sessions of meetings with the farmer union leaders and accepted their demands.

On behalf of the government, Singh had also announced that the government will get a thorough probe conducted regarding the August 28 police lathicharge incident and also probe the role of Ayush Sinha in the entire episode.

British army to start driving tankers as queues for fuel continue

British soldiers will start driving tankers to replenish empty pumps, as drivers queued again for fuel after days of shortages, despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying the situation was improving.

Britain has been gripped by a rush of panic-buying for almost a week that has left pumps dry across major cities, after oil companies warned they did not have enough tanker drivers to move petrol and diesel from refineries to filling stations.

Business minister Kwasi Kwarteng said 150 soldiers had been mobilised, and would be driving tankers within a few days.

“The last few days have been difficult, we’ve seen large queues. But I think the situation is stabilising, we’re getting petrol into the forecourts. I think we’re going to see our way through this,” Kwarteng said.

Johnson has sought to quell concerns, saying supplies were returning to normal while also urging people not to panic buy.

A shortage of around 100,000 drivers has sown chaos through supply chains and raised the spectre of empty shelves and price increases at Christmas.

Never released John Lennon recording sells for $58,300 at Danish auction

A cassette tape recording of an interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, including a never-released song, made while they visited Denmark in 1970 sold for 370,000 Danish crowns ($58,300) at an auction in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

The tape, featuring the unreleased song Radio Peace, was recorded on Jan. 5, 1970 by four 16-year-old Danish boys who succeeded in getting an interview with the couple for a school magazine.

Bids for the cassette tape, which was put up for sale along with photographs from the meeting by the former school boys, started at 100,000 crowns. The lot was valued between 200,000 and 300,000 crowns ($31,500-$47,000) before the auction.

It was not immediately known who bought the recording.

During the 33-minute recording, Lennon speaks about the couple’s peace campaign, his frustration with the Beatles’ image and the length of his hair.

The recording also features Lennon and Ono humming along to Christmas songs while dancing around a Christmas tree, Lennon playing the guitar and the couple singing “Give Peace a Chance” and “Radio Peace.”

The up-tempo song, which repeats the words “this is Radio Peace,” refers to a radio station of the same name that Lennon and Ono hoped to establish in Amsterdam, the auction house said.

World’s richest man Elon Musk once slept on an office couch, worked 7 days a week

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently became the world’s richest man once more, putting Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in second place. With a net worth of $200.7 billion, according to Forbes, Musk today is one of the most recognised and influential people in the tech space, a long, long way from where the Stanford dropout was back in the 90s, when his life had its fair share of struggles.

Unknown to many, Musk’s first project was actually Zip2, a software company that developed an internet-based platform that benefited the newspaper publishing industry by designing online city guides. Founded in 1995, the company was purchased by Compaq Computer in 1999.

During the four years with the company, Musk would share a computer and code everyday at night, seven days a week to keep the website up. In a 2014 commencement speech at the University of Southern California, Musk mentioned that he would sleep on a couch in a small rented office as he couldn’t afford an apartment. Musk would go on to co-found X.com in 1999, one of the first federally insured online banks. However, the board of directors would replace an “inexperienced” Musk with Intuit CEO Bill Harris by the end of the same year. Musk would eventually return as CEO the following year when X.com would merge with Silicon Valley software company Confinity Inc, which had its own money transfer service in the form of PayPal.

A few more complications later, Musk was ousted by the board again and replaced with Confinity co-founder Peter Thiel. Under Thiel, PayPal became the main focus of the company and when it was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, Musk received over $100 million, being the largest shareholder with 11.7 per cent.

Musk spoke about getting fired as the CEO in an interview with Max Chafkin, Senior Writer at Inc. Magazine. The interview also touches on how the PayPal-eBay deal eventually made the Tesla Roadster possible. The company’s first car, the 2008 Roadster was the first production electric sports car that Musk describes as “Faster than a Ferrari and more efficient than a Prius”. Check out the video below.
